Climate Policy Engagement

Evraz PLC does not appear to be engaging directly with climate change policy, however it does appear to hold important roles in trade associations that are positioned negatively on climate change legislation. On its website, Evaz Plc demonstrates some generalised support for reducing GHG emissions on a global level and in 2020 stated support for IPCC demanded emissions reductions. Other than this, Evraz Plc's main corporate website does not appear to disclose any positions towards climate legislation that might be affecting its operations. There is some evidence to suggest that Evraz does not support the imposition of a carbon tax in South Africa. For example, multiple annual reports from the company's subsidiary, Evraz Highveld Steel and Vanadiu, have stressed energy costs concerns and about how the carbon tax would affect the "sustainability of the business." The company has likewise been reported in the press to have stated that related "energy tariff increases" put the future of its South African operations under significant doubt. On its website, Evraz Plc discloses an active participation in the World Steel Association’s Environmental Policy committee. This association's main climate change policy paper warns against "ill-considered and damaging regulation that limits industrial development", particularly in regards to carbon pricing mechanisms that "might jeopardise fair competition" without securing a level playing field. A subsidiary of Evraz Plc is also a member of the American Iron and Steel institute, an organization that has been aggressively opposing GHG emission targets in the US.
